Tarot Fashion: The Magician

Description

Since I started researching and intensely examining the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot, I have been very inspired by their imagery. After I went through my habitual binge on fashion design competition shows (Project Runway, The Fashion Show, etc.) I started getting the idea to design clothes inspired by different tarot cards.

Oddly enough, I got the idea to do this before I watched the episode of The Fashion Show in which they had to do just that - design clothes based off one tarot card after getting a single tarot card read for them. However, while they were basing their designs off of the meaning of the card that the psychic told them, so their clothes didn't necessarily look like the cards at all, I am in contrast basing my designs off of the imagery of the cards themselves, so I will be using the colors, shapes, symbols, etc. that are present in the cards.

I'm not much of a fashion designer, really - I haven't taken any fashion design classes or really found the materials to research it intensely, so I'm really only working with what I've learned from watching every season of Project Runway and my own basic intuition. If anybody who actually knows shit about fashion stumbles across this, if you see any major screw-ups or mistakes I would really appreciate it if you'd point them out to me.

So here's The Magician! I pretty much went off of the idea of modernizing his outfit while keeping it recognizably his. I changed the white under-robe into a white shirt, his red over-robe into a duster, his white head-band is now a hat-band, and his ouroboros belt is now a modern belt (on a related note - there are now ouroboros belts that look like this for sale anywhere - I searched all over too!). I was thinking about giving him blue jeans, but I liked giving him black ones better, since it not only looks classy but also makes the color scheme of the outfit black, red and white, which anybody who knows anything about alchemy will get the significance of. Making the orouboros belt gold was another idea along this line of thought.

I like how he ended up looking like a wanderer or explorer, since it fits into the interpretation of The Magician as representing Hermes in his position as God of Travelers.

Any comments or criticism - if it's constructive - would be greatly appreciated!

BTW, I used a fashion "model" that came from some website as a base for him and his pose. I would credit it, but I didn't save the URL and for the life of me I haven't been able to find it again anywhere.
